![]() This low level proved to be a coolant cap leaking, venting water vapor. After the water pump was replaced and the system again refilled I didn't have to top up until the warning light came and I found the level about a gallon low. I drove my Boxster over 100K miles from when it had a radiator replaced and the cooling system refilled to when the water pump needed to be replaced at 172K miles without having to add a drop of coolant/water. My experience is with my Boxster and my Turbo (and other cars) with a properly operating cooling system I do not have to top the coolant level up. When my Boxster's low coolant light came on it took a gallon of distilled water to bring the level up the the proper line. If the warning light is on the coolant level is way below being a cup or two low. But, this is a very repeatable, high occurance failure on BMWs. I proactively replaced the cooling system on my BMW 325 wagon at 50,000 miles too. Coolant light came on as my wife got home, poored distilled water in, and it just poured right out onto the garage floor from the crack in the expansion tank. OK, if he has to put a gallon in to top it off, and / or there is water pouring out all over the floor, or his exhaust looks more like a steam shower, I would be worrying too, but please, lets try to keep things in persepective.Īnd yes, I have also had a coolant system failure on my BMW330ci right at the expected 50,000 mile mark (expansion tank) and replaced the entire cooling system (radiator too) that cost $2000. Yes, it could be some pending catastrophic failure, but I seriously doubt it. I bet I have to top off all my cars at some point every 12-18 months. In fact, I just had to top off the coolant on my wife's BMW 135 that has 10,000 miles on it (yep, about 1 cup), and no, I did not run around freaking out about it. This usually occurs when it gets colder out, but even in the summer it is not uncommon. ![]() If not, then think about taking it to the dealer to see whats up. Top it off, if it is just a small ammout, check it again in a day, or a week, and my bet is that it is just as full as when you topped it off. I'll also bet that when he goes to top it off with some distilled water, it will take a cup, maybe 2 cups to get it to the top full level, and who even knows how far it was below "full - full" to start with. ![]() My bet is that he is slightly below the trigger level on the coolant, so once it gets the least bit of heat in it, the coolant expands enought to turn the sensor off. The paranoia around here is getting a bit out of hand, don't you all think?Ĭome on, the guy's coolant light comes on and goes off quickly.
